They are increasingly assertive in interviews."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The average salary offered in job advertisements was 1,472 euros in the first half of the year. Depending on the type of position and sector, the typical salary ranged from one thousand to two and a half thousand euros. Job advertisements mostly state the lower limit of the salary indicated for a specific job position. This suggests that an applicant could reach a higher level. The job interview often decides this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201eIn recent years, candidates have become much more confident in salary negotiations than they were in the past. At the same time, employers are generally prepared to negotiate salary with candidates during interviews,\u201c explains Miriam Krpel\u00e1nov\u00e1, director of the HR agency Trigon Consulting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The request for an increase in the starting salary is considered regular. Some candidates want to secure the most favorable starting point this way, and many do so out of concern that later on, the fight for a higher salary will be much more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concerns may or may not reflect reality. Some companies may indeed have poorly structured salary policies; they may not have regular salary increases enshrined in their collective labor agreement and are unable to manage incremental raises. In such cases, an applicant's motivation to ask for a higher salary from the outset is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, many companies are much more open to salary increases only after they have tested a candidate and they prove themselves in practice. They see their results, get to know them better, and thus have the numbers in hand that can help the employee achieve a higher salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It's debatable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Requests to increase starting salaries are becoming more common in job interviews, but mentor and job interview expert Silvia Skalick\u00e1 does not believe that a job interview is the right time and place to negotiate salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201eThe employee hasn't shown anything yet and is therefore at a disadvantage,\u201c the expert believes. Even if they excelled with their previous employer, according to her, it's questionable how they will perform with a new employer. Nothing guarantees that they will build upon their success in a new environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, the current job market situation favors efforts to negotiate for more money from the start of employment. Many companies have trouble finding specialists and even more trouble retaining them. Therefore, the topic of salary can be a sensitive area during a job interview, and whether it's worth entering depends on several factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, S. Skalick\u00e1 does not definitively claim that asking for a higher salary is automatically taboo at every interview. Ultimately, it always depends on the company itself and what it will tolerate in the context of its needs. There is no general rule for when it is and is not appropriate to discuss salary. Therefore, the applicant should ask the employer if it is acceptable to them at that moment. \u201eI have experienced first-round interviews where salary was not discussed at all. However, I have also been asked to find a candidate for a position that was very difficult to fill, and the candidate could set their own salary range they were willing to accept,\u201c the expert noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than pressuring a potential employer with a demand for a higher salary, she believes it's more appropriate to agree on a timeframe for future salary increases. This way, the candidate has a chance to demonstrate their value to the company, which legitimizes salary negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They are boasting about competing offers.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many candidates who decide that the offered salary is too low for them tend to argue with offers from other companies. Although companies did not consider this strategy appropriate in the past, according to M. Krpel\u00e1nov\u00e1, it is becoming an increasingly common practice nowadays. However, S. Skalick\u00e1 does not consider it an effective solution. A job interview should be a conversation exclusively between the candidate and the employer, and other variables should not be involved. These can ultimately be counterproductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established experts and specialists, who are in short supply on the market, have better chances of achieving a higher salary than the company offers. This currently applies to specialists in the fields of energy and alternative sources. \u201eIf a company hires an experienced professional, in most cases, they have a higher budget prepared than what is advertised in the job posting,\u201c adds M.
